"The definitive guide to the history of western costume."―Antiques Info

This is another one of my John Peacock books. I have two others that I have yet to inform you about. It is a bit time consuming to change the product descriptions and add new photos. It is no wonder that most companies do not bother with it. Anyhow, this book shows an extensive history of Western fashion. The book starts with Ancient Egypt, oddly enough. Then again, Western History beings in Africa and the moves into Europe. Peacock has all the outfits organized based on chronology. He also mentions the point of origin of each of the outfits.

People tend to think that Europe is homogenous. However, up till recently Europe was a collection of different countries who hated each other. At the end of each decade, he has a section describing the names of each of the dress pieces. This is useful for when looking up individual garments. The end of the book focuses more on Parisian fashion. Overall, the book has over 1000 illustrations. As for the author, he is a fashion designer for the BBC. He makes all the period costume of all those boring British melodramas.

  • Does the book have any attires worn by Kings and Queens?

The book tends to focus a lot more in clothing worn by nobles and people from the middle class. It does include from time to time some outfits worn by Kings like Henry the 8th and one by Queen Elizabeth. Both were quite fashion oriented. Don't forget, the guy who wrote the book is British.

  • Does this book include clothing worn by different classes and religions?

The book doesn't feature any clothing worn by religious figures. Though from time to time, they feature peasant clothing.

  • What does the book mean by Western Fashion?

The book means fashion by people living mostly in Europe. The start of the book includes people from Egypt and Sumaria. This is due because Western people consider those places to be part of their culture. So, when people say western it is referring to a culture, not to a geographic location.

  • Are all the pages in this book in color?

The book is mostly in colors. However, between each chapter there are black and white illustrations, with numbers and descriptions of each of the fabrics.

  • Does the book explain anything or is it just drawings, without any explanations?

The book introduce each of the large time periods. At the end of each chapters, the book describes all the clothing featured in each of the pages.
