There really isn't much to say about the format of photos. There is many ways to get it together. The real issue people have to work with is people. Photographers always have a hard time getting their sitters in an artsy form, that doesn't look fake. I tend to avoid it by photographing people in public spaces. Since they are there, I am in my full right to photograph them. So, if you do not want to be photographed avoid such places.
For more serious stuff, you have to be kind to your sitter. This is best shown by the baby photographers. Getting a baby to look cute for a photo is apparently really hard to manage. Parents usually take the pictures, when the baby is acting cute. For professional arrangements, it is a bit harder. Some folks say that one should photograph a brat in a warm and cozy place.
It is important to do it in a well light area. Always keep your sitter clean and cozy. Before trying to take a cute photo, make certain that the parents had the baby fed, and bathed. When dressing the baby for the photo, keep it simple. Babies are already cute. They do not need too many gimmicks. The clothing should not outshine the baby.
Also, don't pester the baby. If the baby is sleeping, wait for him to wake up. During the shooting, also focus on small details. Like the mother holding the hand of the baby. Parents tend to overlook such details in their candid. As for clothing, keep the colors muted. The little baby is the star of the show. So, if you can master baby photography you can handle any sort of sitter.
