Details: This is a silly, small book about the fashion of the Jazz Age. Aside from the Victorian Era, the Jazz Age has some of my favorite attires. The book features the flapper dresses, and all the pretty feathers too. It explains all the fashion trends that became quite commonplace in the 1920s. During that decade, the youth culture finally became centerfold. Everything was about going to parties and having fun. This time period was also when the women's movement finally got some steam.

This is when women finally got rid of the corsages. The dresses became flat. Focus centered on the dress print, instead of the design of the dresses. Women preferred those types of dresses because they felt free. Those attires influenced writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote about the nightlife. The book is rather short, with large, high detailed photos. I was able to finish reading it in one sit in.

The book doesn't stay just in Europe. It also mentions the 1920s fashion sensitivities originating from Russia. A lot of dressmakers left Russia after the Revolution. Some even opened their own dress shops in Europe. This book also illustrates the growth of Sports and Swim wear. Now, there was a specific type of attire for both sports. Before then, they would wear pajamas, their undergarments or their birthday suit.

  The book does mention other countries aside from the US. It mentions the Deco art movement in France, and England and Russia too. Russia was a big influence in the Deco Art movement, with their traveling ballet troops. 

• How are each of the dresses displayed? Is it pictures or photos or a bit of both?

  The book features dresses in illustration formats, photos, drawings and in painting forms. In those days, color illustrations were more common than actual photos. It was the time when illustrators and designers worked together, hand in hand to promote their products. 

• How big is this book?

  I know the book seems big in the picture, but is actually rather small. Not as small as a paper back, but not remotely big either. It is just about right, kind of smaller than a magazine. 

• Does the book mention anything about popular designers of the day?

  The book does mention plenty of designer names like Coco Chanel. It also describes what were the popular aesthetic choices of those designers. So, you get the gist of their style, without having to look at another book.

• Is this like a history book or a picture book?

  It is more like an art history book, if you ever read one. It has plenty of pictures and example sof different deco art trends. It is mostly pictures and photos.
