Details: Product Description A visually stunning and surprisingly accessible book that brings out subtle facets of Proust's masterpiece, as well as the artworks he cites. ―Art in America A la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust is one of the most profoundly visual works in Western literature. Eric Karpeles has identified and located the many paintings to which Proust makes reference and sets them alongside the relevant text from the novel; in other cases, where only a painter's name is mentioned to indicate a certain style or appearance, Karpeles has chosen a representative work to illustrate the impression that Proust sought to evoke. With some 200 paintings beautifully reproduced in full color and texts drawn from the Moncrieff/Kilmartin/Enright translation, as well as concise commentaries on the evolving narrative, this book is an essential addition to the libraries of Proustians everywhere. The book also includes an authoritative introduction and a comprehensive index of artists and paintings mentioned in the novel. 200 color illustrations Review "A book which no Proust addict can afford to miss." Anita Brookner "Will thrill any Proust lover." Financial Times "Will undoubtedly be greeted with the literary equivalent of a hosanna."  The New York Times "Intelligent and passionate...a window into Proust's sharp, eccentric wit."  The Irish Times "A visually stunning and surprisingly accessible book that brings out subtle facts of Proust's masterpiece, as well as artworks he cites...Karpeles comes close to encapsulating Proust's vision... Paintings in Proust could serve effectively as either a concise preface or a meaningful afterword to the monumental novel. What's more, it can be appreciated entirely on its own."  Art in America From the Back Cover "A visually stunning and surprisingly accessible book that brings out subtle facts of Proust's masterpiece, as well as artworks he cites...Karpeles comes close to encapsulating Proust's vision... Paintings in Proust could serve effectively as either a concise preface or a meaningful afterword to the monumental novel. What's more, it can be appreciated entirely on its own." Art in America About the Author A Fellow of the Czeslaw Milosz Institute at the Claremont Colleges, Eric Karpeles has given the Amon Carter Lecture on the Arts at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, worked as a volunteer ambulance driver, spoken on Proust at Berkeley and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, walked from Bath to Oxford, interviewed composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim onstage, and collaborated on a book of mathematical equations and Hebrew references used as a prop in a film by the Coen Brothers. He studied at the Art Students League of New York as a boy and lived at the Cité des Arts in Paris as a young man. A painter and voracious reader whose idea of hell is being on public transportation without a book, he likes to cook, or, perhaps more tellingly, he likes to eat. He once had tea with Indira Gandhi and has lived with the same man for forty years.
