I snacked on McIntosh or Red Delicious when there weren't any cookies on hand. I looked forward to fall, when my mother made Grandma's Apple Crisp (page 205). We made an annual trek to a pick-your-own orchard every October. And somewhere in that very conventional introduction, apples took root in my imagination.
