Details: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 - 1905) was a French painter to the movement of academicism.Having shown considerable talent since childhood, he received his artistic training in one of the most prestigious art schools of his time, the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, next to the Louvre museum. He later found himself teaching at the Académie Julian, a private school of painting and sculpture. His career flourished in the golden age of academic art, of which he was one of the most famous representatives and an ardent supporter. His painting is characterized by a perfect mastery of both form and technique, with a high quality that manages to achieve significant effects of realism. In terms of style, he was part of the eclectic movement that dominated the second half of the 19th century, mixing elements of neoclassicism with others of romanticism in a naturalistic approach with a good dose of idealism. He has produced a large number of works, focusing on themes of classical mythology but also ranging in the field of allegory, history, and religion, and is also known for his portraits of artistic nudity and images of young peasants and shepherdesses.Accumulated a vast fortune and gained international fame during his life, receiving numerous awards and decorations, such as the Prix de Rome and the Legion of Honour, towards the end of his career; however, he began to be increasingly discredited by the precursors of modernism. From the beginning of the twentieth century, shortly after his death, his work was quickly forgotten, being considered by the most empty and artificial, a model of all that art should not be, but in the eighties his art was progressively re-evaluated, and today Bouguereau is considered as one of the great painters of the nineteenth century.
