Mardi Gras takes place close to the end of Carnival. So, you cannot talk about Mardi Gras before mentioning Carnival. Carnival started in Rome.
It was called Saturnalia. It used to take place in December. Aside from drinking and dancing, they also gave out gifts. In medieval times, it evolved into Carnival.
It was a celebration that was done before the period of fasting and meditation called Lent. The Bosch painting shows a parade float. These floats used to be in the water.
They each had a theme. The paintings of Carnival and Mardi Gras become more common once we got in modern time. I hope you find these artworks amusing.
There is going to be a blog of this topic in my Artsy Sister Youtube channel. It should be out and about at the start of Carnival season.
Don’t forget to give a like and subscribe. My name is Teresita Blanco, the Artsy Sister. Bye, bye and God bless.
