Today, I decided to rant about mother’s in art. One of the earliest depictions of a mother features Nefertiti with her princesses on her lap.
Showing a mother with her baby became the standard way of depicting a mother. The Greeks had some variances here and there.
They even showed mothers nursing in statues. There is even a vase that shows potty training. During the middle ages, the Virgin Mary became the most common mother that appeared in art.
She was supposed to be a role model for all Christian women. Ironically, Queens and rich women couldn’t raise their kids.
Their social obligations forced them to relegate those roles to wetnurses and governess. During the baroque time, fathers began to appear with their wives and kids in painter portraits.
Having lots of children was seen as a blessing. This was so since infant mortality was ridiculously high in the old ages. It was rare for children to survive till adulthood.
As we get close to modern times, the depiction of a mother and baby remains pretty common. There are so variants here and there, but somethings remain the same. There is a video of this topic in my Artsy Sister Youtube channel.
It should be out on Mother’s Day. Please give a like and subscribe. My name is Teresita Blanco, the Artsy Sister. Bye, bye and God bless. Above, you can see many examples of Mothers throughout the ages, made in different styles.
