Darkness Falls
I got bored of rating kids movies. Thus, I thought I would rate a few 5 stars worthy scary movies. At a certain point, scary movies got disgusting. Via the special effects, scary movies became impossible, intolerable for me to watch. Interesting enough, 5 minutes of today's scary movies allowed me to watch a lot of old scary movies. Yeah, in comparison to today's scary movies, the old stuffs are child's play. You get, it? That's the name of a scary movie! Nah, you are no fun. Well, onto Darkness Falls! Darkness Falls is about an evil monster called the Tooth Fairy.
It’s more of a poltergeist. Like it is usual, something terrible happened to the Tooth Fairy in her earlier life. She was wrongfully accused of killing kids. For her crime, she was hanged. Now, her spirit wonders in the darkness collecting Teeth. The Tooth Fairy does not like to be seen. Whenever a human sees her, she follows him till the ends of the earth, to kill him. The movie begins with the main guy seeing the Tooth Fairy. He hid from the demon in the bathroom. You see that strange beast is afraid of the light. The light purifies her. Plus, she was weak against the light in her past life. Sometime passed, and we skip to this family of a mother and her son. She has just moved to Darkness Falls, the home of Tooth Fairy.
Her son one day loses her last baby teeth. Whenever that tooth falls, the Tooth Fairy comes to get it. He made the mistake of looking at her. I guess it’s hard to ignore something creepy, hovering over you. When he saw her, the fairy attacked the kid. For a while, the mother thought the kid was hurting himself. Eventually, the mother met the kid from the start of the movie. He is now a grown up. He has managed to avoid the fairy for many years. Now, it is up to him to save the latest victim of the Tooth Fairy. There you have the generic plot in a nutshell.
The darkness works pretty well. We all remember, as children, our fear of the darkness. We felt safe, whenever the light was turned on. This movie appealed to the viewer’s early fears of the dark and unknown. The design of the fairy was pretty interesting. It really did look like a burned up old hag. The movie has the right amount of tension. It always keeps you in suspense. To be honest, this was a scary movie whose promos caused me to have nightmares.
I only got around to watching it, recently. By now, I am already immune to old scary movies. Well, Darkness Falls is not that old. Its only from 2003. However, after Avatar, the special effects took a great leap forward. Today's scary movies, have the best special effects. However, their storyline have gotten a bit iffy.
Night of the Living Dead
I few years ago, I watched the original Night of the Living Dead. I thought it was a pretty cool black and white film. It was so good, that the library of Congress deemed it worthy of preservation. It had a lot of sequels, written by the same director, George A. Romero. This film was not attached to any big company. It was an independent film of sorts. What is best about the movie are the gory special effects. For its time, the movie was really gory.
Like we all know, this movie starts with two siblings visiting the grave of their father. Like most zombie movies, it is in the heat of summer. The brother pretends to get attacked by a living dead. Later, he does get attacked by a zombie. He tells his sister Barbra to run for it. Barbra arrives to a farmhouse and finds the owners dead. Later, on arrives the main male protagonist, Ben.
Ben represents the resourceful strongman. In a time of crisis, it is men like Ben, which take charge of the situation. Hiding in the cellar was a nuclear family of a mother, a father and their daughter. The father simply wanted to hide, and wait for help. The Cooper family represents southern conservative. In any case, Ben thought it was a death trap. Since he was a man of action, he refused to sit there and wait for help.
Later on, they were joined by a young couple. They helped Ben prepare the house for the coming zombie attack. The family man on the meantime, goes to hide in the cellar. He had a family and thus much to lose. Like the Conservatives of the time, the Cooper father had blind faith in the authorities. Ben, does not trust them. At the time, blacks knew never to rely on the white, racist authorities. His distrust of them is not unfounded, considering what happened in the end.
Barbra in the movie is the dramatic foil of Ben. She cannot accept the reality of the situation. For most of the movie, she remains in shock. When she saw her brother among the zombie army, she went out to embrace him and got eaten by the beast. She represented the weak, white women of the time. The type of woman who could do nothing without their men. The minute she was left alone, she broke down.
The young couple represents youth. Like young kids their age, they sided with Ben, the man of action. Since their young, they are more adaptable. They rose up to the challenge, early on. Well, whatever, I am certain that you will like this classic zombie movie. It is very gory and scary, even by today's standards.
Resident Evil Horror Zombie Movie Review
Resident Evil is a movie based on a zombie Horror game. Each movie follows loosely the storyline. They also use the main characters of each game for their movies. In Japan, it is known as Bio Hazard. It is Capcom's Horror game masterpiece. This movie starts at the beginning. The main character is Alice. She is a fictional character created for the film. Originally, the game focused on a special task force gathered together to investigate the Hive Mansion. Alice is thus swept, into the Resident Evil's world, when this task force picks her up.
Alice starts off as blind as the team searching the Mansion. Like them, she has no idea what has occurred. Heck, she seems to be having a case of amnesia. Following the plot of the game, the task force is investigating the Mansion. They do not believe that Alice has amnesia. Plus, they picked up another amnesiac guy, next to her. To keep an eye on the pair, they take them along to search the mansion. In the beginning, nothing too creepy happens. There is a lot of tension.
However when the task force turns off the Red Queen (a.i. computer), the movie goes from bad to worse. It says a lot of the Umbrella corporation. They have a lot of cool zombies, laser beams and the Red Queen. For those not familiar with Resident Evil, I must say this is one creepy movie. It is quite violent and gory. It also includes a healthy dose of human mutation. The general theme is "survival of the fittest". A lot of other cool things happen in the movie, but I will not spoil the ending. Just take my word for it. It is a really good gory movie. I hope that I said was enough to pick your interest.
Poltergeist 1,2 and 3 Horror Movies Reviews
The Poltergeist movies are 5 stars worthy. What is most amassing about them is what occurred to the little girl of each movie. Like the Dumbledore actor, all three little girl actors who played Carol Ann died. None of them survived any of the poltergeist movies. I suppose I should tell you about the movies. In the first movie, Carol Ann one day begins to talk to the static on the TV set. Eventually, the static manifest a spirit that rocks the house like an earthquake. After this earthquake she says her infamous, "They are here..." phrase.
Yeah, in the 80s TVs had static. Today, Carol Ann would be simply talking to the blue screen. Anyhow, since the first apparition things went from bad to worse. The first poltergeist movie had a lot of interesting special effects. For being a pretty old horror movie, it works pretty well. In the second part, the family is living with grandma Jess. Grandma Jess has some psychic powers of sorts.
A year after the first Poltergeist event, Grandma Jess begins to sense that something is amiss. Frankly, I liked the second part the best. The family hoped that by moving away, their ghost problem would have gone away. However, the Poltergeist is still after Carol Ann. Here the poltergeist is not some faceless demon. Here is personified in the form of a creepy protestant cult leader, called Henry Kane.
As he walked around the neighborhood, Henry Kane used to sing, "God is in his holy temple, watching from above". Following his song, was a creepy storm of sorts. It was a great creepy effect. Anyhow, this guy was still after Carol Ann because of her clairvoyant powers. She had influence in the other side. Such supernatural powers skip generations. Her grandma Jess was also like her. However, she was able to put a lid on it.
Around this time, Carol Ann's father has become a drunkard. He drinks to escape from the terrible reality that haunts his family. I thought it was cool how the Poltergeist possessed the scorpion inside the bottle. When the father drank it, accidentally, he became possessed by the demon. The dispossession was pretty disgusting, in a scary movie sort of fashion. A lot of other things happened in the second part, but I don't want to spoil the rest.
The last movie had the bad Carol Anne actor. The poor girl is going to a school for special kids. I guess all those dealings with poltergeists screw the girl up. In this movie, once again the big bad ghost is after her. This movie is a bit more like Alice in Wonderland: Through the looking glass. Here the girl was trapped inside the mirrors.
I think the ghost tracked them down to a hotel. The last movie was not too hilarious. Frankly, it sucked. The issue was that the third part was not written by the true creators of the Poltergeist films. As it happens, whenever a movie is commercially successful, they try to force another part. Frankly, only the first two movies are worth watching. The second part had the feel of an ending. Anyhow, Phi Stars recommends Poltergeist part 1 and 2. They are 5 stars worthy Horror movies.
You know, another problem with the third movie is that most of the cast was dead. When writing the script, they needed an excuse for not having the original family members. Most died, after the filming of the second movie. Heck, only two survived the 3 Poltergeist movies. Lets do some math here! Originally the family of Carol Ann had 5 members. After three movies, 3 died. Scary... but weird things like this happen from time to time. I guess the creators of the Poltergeist movies stumbled upon something they should not have.
The Others
This review is aimed at those who have never seen this movie before. For those who have, let us keep the surprising ending a secret. The Others is the kind of movie that is good only the first time around. Once you know the ending, then you already get all the weird ghost business of the movie. From all the ghost movies that I have seen, The Others is the most creative one I have ever seen. Without further ado, I will tell you a bit about the Others.
The first thing I must mention is the starring actress Nicole Kidman. In this movie, she stars as Grace Stewart. She lives in a remote mansion with her two kids. The movie begins with her showing the mansion too her four new servants. She is giving them important instructions about shutting and closing all doors. She requires of them to keep the windows curtains closed all the time.
The problem is that her two kids have a rare illness. The kids suffer from Xeroderna Pigmentosum. This illness makes it hard for humans to repair damage caused by UV rays. As such, the kids are never allowed outside during the day. I thought it was a made-up illness. However, it truly exists. This illness is recessive. For it to have be passed on to the kids, both the mother and the father must have had the genes for it.
For the movie purposes, both kids had the illness. There were 1/4 chances of the kids having the illness. The mother just got really unlucky. In any case, now you know the kids. After the new servants moved in, some odd events begin to occur. The girl begins to talk about a kid named Victor. The mother thinks the girl is lying. However, as the movie progresses, Grace realizes that there are Others inside the house. The true reason for these disturbances is quite amassing. The tension in this movie is just right.
The Forgotten
The Forgotten is a horror movie that has been forgotten. For some stupid reason, its gotten a lot of negative reviews. Frankly, I loved this film. It is one of the few movies that I saw on the theater. The movie stars Julianne Moore. In this movie, she plays a mom, named Telly Paretta. This is not an usual role for Julianne Moore. I seen her in a lot of movies acting the role of the overprotective mom. The movie begins with Telly taking her son to the airport. The kid is going on a field trip. On that day, the airplane crashed.
Sometime passes, and Telly is dealing with the accident. In the TV version, the plane crash got changed for a train accident. I think it had something to with the FCCs over sensitivity. They thought the plane crash would remind the viewers of 9/11. Anyhow, originally it was a plane crash for the Forgotten horror movie. Lets move on, after the accident Telly started going to therapy. One day, all evidence of her son's existence disappeared.
When she asked her husband about her son's things, he acted like he never existed. She was freaked out. She then visited her neighbor whose kid was also in the plane. She was shocked to find that he had forgotten his child. After this, she went frantic. She could not believe that all had forgotten about their kids. She showed her neighbor that she was not crazy when she tore the wallpaper of his kid's room. The previous wallpaper was the decorations of his kids playroom. After this, they both went to the police. As usual, all thought they were crazy. Only one policewoman believed them. The rest of the force did not have any memory that there ever was a plane crash.
At a certain point, the policewoman goes to them saying that she had all the answers. As she approached them, she was swept into the sky. She disappeared in a most violent and abrupt fashion. I remember that part well in the theater. The way she left surprised a lot of people in the theater. I know because they yelled a lot. From then on, the Forgotten movie got weirder and weirder. The ending of the movie is a bit cheesy. I guess it had to do with the bond of a mother and child. Most male critic hate mom movies. They find it revolting to see movies about such a bond. I guess they have, by now, forgotten their bond with their own mothers.
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror Halloween Stories
I wanted to write again about the Simpsons for quite some time. However, there are a lot of things to mention in such a long series. As such, I wanted to take an atomistic approach to rating this long series. That being the case, I will rate the Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror. Overall, those Halloween episodes are peachy. From the stories, there are a few that I liked a lot.
From the first Treehouse of Horror, I liked the Raven. It was a parody of "The Raven" poem by Edgard Allen Poe. It was a good introduction to the Simpsons series of horror parodies. I liked how Bart played the Raven. Homer was the speaker and Marge was Lenore. Her painting had a second part for her hair decoration. I thought it was cute that the only horror story that got to Homer, was the Raven.
Following, I liked Lisa's Nightmare, from the Treehouse of Horror II. That story was a parody of the Monkey's Paw. It is a classical tale about a paw that grants wishes. In both stories, the wishes had a way of turning up sour. This episode was consistent on that fact. The irony is that when Flanders wished for something, things turned out beautifully for him. Its funny cause Homer gave Flanders the Monkey's paw because he wanted him to squirm.
In the Treehouse of Horror V, I liked the Shinning Parody. There Mr. Burns asked the Simpsons to be house sitters. He also cut the TV and took all the booze. Like in the movie, Homer went nuts. At a certain point, he Hallucinated with Moe who told him to kill his family. They also did the whole writing in the wall thing. This time Homer wrote "No TV or Beer Make Homer go Crazy".
They also did the Ax thing and the red rum thing. Like in the movie, Marge fought off Homer with a Bat. Homer imitated well the crazy rantings of the father. Liza also picked up the butcher knife like the Shinning kid. When Homer was locked away, he was picked up by a lot of classical monsters. One was a mummy, the other was Dracula, a werewolf, Jason and lastly the guy with the pin face (from a horror movie whose name alludes me).
Oh, I forgot! Bart acted as the kid from the Shinning. Willy was the black guy from the movie who tried to save the family. This ending was just like in the movie. Except that the entire Simpson family got Frozen up together in the cold stone.
The next mini story that I liked was Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace. This one was part of the Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror VI. This one was a parody of a Nightmare on Elms Street. Freddy Krueger was played by Groundskeeper Willy. He was the perfect Nutcase for this movie parody. The way he died was a bit off. However, like Freddy Krueger, Willy got burned to a crisp.
The dreams worked pretty well. I liked the way Martin died. I found it hilarious how his dead body was accidentally sent to classroom of the Kindergartens. I liked how Maggie was the one who saved the day. Its a bummer why Willy returned to the real world, when he was killed in the dream world.
The next one that I liked was "Hex and the City". Here Homer accidentally ruined the workplace of a gypsy. She in turn cursed Homer. He would bring suffering to all he loved. I thought it was hilarious how he missed Moe's death. He was inside his egg jar. As time passed, his family began to change. Marge turned into a blue furry, Maggie changed into a ladybug and Lisa became a centaur. Bart committed suicide because he could not live with his long neck.
Eventually, Homer got a leprechaun to fight the gypsy. I found it hilarious that the curse never got lifted. Even though, the gypsy had her happy ending. The problem was that Homer had to ask Bart for forgiveness. Yeah, he was not planning to do that anytime soon. If I remember correctly, this episode was from the Treehouse of Horror XXII.
The next mini story that I liked was The Day the Earth Looked Stupid. That one was from the Treehouse of Horror XXVII. This one was based on the Orson Welles reading of the World of the Wars. This episode is not that farfetched. The people back then really believed that they were invaded by aliens. The problem was that many people did not hear, or forgot the beginning disclaimer.
Plus, the play had the feel of an official announcement. Anyhow, Springfield's reaction was pretty much accurate. However, the thing of pretending to be animals was their own unique reaction to the problem. I thought it was funny when the aliens did attack.
Jeepers Creepers
Jeepers Creepers is a really bizarre horror movie. The movie is about two siblings who stumble upon something bizarre. Deep in the south, their lives a bizarre monster who thrives on fear. Like in such bizarre stories, the story begins with Trish and Darry Jenner. They are driving down the Florida countryside. Out of the blue, they get thrown out of the road by a psycho trucker. Eventually, they saw the same truck pulling up in an abandoned church. The trucker has a body bag. It seemed like the person was still alive. Here the siblings make the stupid choice to help out the man. Beneath the church, they discovered the secret of the beast. Since then, the monsters begin to pursue the siblings. They eventually manage to elude the beast.
They try calling the police at a random gas station. In the gas station, they get a phone call from a local seer. She told them of the beast and its creepy theme song. From then on, this movie gets weirder and gorier. It did not have a happy ending of sorts. The second part was even weirder. The monster starts using ninja stars to fight. He is still doing his usual antics. What I found most creepy was the Jeepers Creepers theme song. What I liked best was when the thing got run over, and his wings began to flap.
Thirteen Ghosts
From what I read, the Thirteen Ghosts of 2001 is a remake of a classical horror film of the 1960s. Its the same as the first movie, except with better graphics. This movie is part of a long list of better graphics movie remakes. The movie begins with Cyrus Kriticos. Cyrus is a ghost hunter of sorts. He has great knowledge of the occult. Since he is rich, he has lots of helpers and stuff. Anyhow, he recently tracked down the final ghost he needed to complete his collection.
This ghost was called the Juggernaut. Back when he was alive he was a vicious killer. He kept killing even after his death. He currently haunts an abandon junk heap. That place was perfect for him to use his ghost powers. You know, the usual levitation tricks and all. Long story short, Cyrus got killed by the ghost he was trying to catch.
After, the first ten minutes of gory madness, the movie turns to a cute family. Cyrus' distant relative has inherited his creepy mansion after he died. Cyrus' nephew lives with his two kids and his nanny. His wife died a few years back. He is trying to get over his wife's death. Anyhow, to save money, the family goes to live at Cyrus's mansion.
Little did the family know that Cyrus's mansion was more than just a mansion. It is a prison for all the ghost that Cyrus has captured. Well, the family is safe, as long as they do not open the prisons holding the beast. Well, more creepy things happen in the movie. However, I do not want to spoil them. I must say that each ghost is more unique and bizarre than the last. Plus, their uniqueness serves a higher purpose.
I Am Legend Horror Movie Review
I, Legend is a horror movie of sorts. It was the inspiration for the first Resident Evil movies. This movie is the third remake of "the last man on earth" movie. Bummer, in the TV its called I, Legend. However, its truly called "I am legend". Well, I am not going to get too caught up in the title. For my purposes, I will use the title that the internet claims to be true. Regardless, the main characters are Will Smith and a dog. He plays a virologist (a guy who studies viruses) named Robert Neville.
The movie begins with an announcement about the cure for cancer. Scientist have been dreaming of curing cancer for real. Not really, there is not a market for cures, just treatments. Supposedly, this antidote was going to save lots of lives. As its usual with most post-apocalyptic films, something goes horribly wrong. The antidote mutated with the common flue. It released a terrible airborne virus that annihilated all mankind. Those that did not die became horrible monsters.
Our main character, Robert Neville was immune to the virus. Thus, he survived. He stayed behind in New York. It was there where the virus first mutated. He stays there, kidnapping living human samples to try out his antidotes. Speaking of the new humans, they are called Darkseekers. The virus made them extra sensitive to light. Thus, they only hunt out at night. They also behave like savage predatory animals. For most of the movie, Will Smith spends it alone. He starts getting paranoid at a certain point.; specially, when the monsters start moving around his cardboard people at night. Mostly, this movie is about coping with loneliness. It’s also a good hunting movie. hehehehe! It is really intense.
Final Destination Horror Movie Series
Today, I wanted to rate the final destination movies. Specifically, I wanted to focus on the first three movies. The others were a bit too gory for my taste. Plus, after a certain point, Final Destination simply focused on creative accidental deaths. So let us focus on the original vision. The first movie begins with a student field trip. One of the students, had a premonition that the place was going to crash. His panic helped to get a few of his fellow students and his teacher off the plane.
While they were arguing with the kids they saw the plane blowing up. After this incident, the air marshals interrogated the premonition kid. They thought that he had planted a bomb of sorts. However, all they got out of him were his rantings about seeing the future. After avoiding death for the first time, there is usually a grace period in the Final Destination movies.
This grace period usually lasts as long as the funeral of the first victims. Once they are buried, death starts to pursue the survivors. From then on, the Final Destination movies becomes the ancient struggle of mankind to avoid death. Here Death has taken a special interest on those who avoided death. Overall, these movies are about avoiding destiny. It shows the futility of such efforts.
Then again, one cannot simply give up and die. For the most part, the types of death depend on the death they avoided. Thus, the brats of the first movie suffer terrible deaths. Aside from death, there are several similarities among the Final Destination movies. There is usually a different group of survivors. There is usually always a person who gets a premonition. That person also finds some sort of clue of the order of deaths. Also, the number of people who survive the Final Destination movies are usually rather low.
In the second movie, the survivors found a way to get death off their back. If I remember correctly, in the second part, the first death was an elaborate car accident. Since then, I have been paranoid about lumber cars. The third movie focused on an accident in a roller coaster. The third movie was not too hilarious. When I watched the second part, I was aware that I was watching a second part. They even had one of the survivors of the first part.
Overall, what makes the Final Destination movies are the character dynamics. The tragedy is that after the third part, everything became about elaborate deaths. Those movies became one gory nightmare. Frankly, I only recommend for you the first three movies. The others that came were no fun at all. The 3D version was pretty peachy. Quite the gory thrill ride... for those into gory nightmares. The best ones are the first three parts.
