 Sweets became more commonplace in Western art thanks to the Colonies. The sugar cane industry stimulated to boom of sweets.

They were quite common in the baroque period. They fell out of fashion as far as a subject matter when Nicolas Poussin came into the picture.

Pop Art

 He considered still lives not worth one’s time. Sweets made a comeback with the industrial revolution.

They became more common place in paintings in the 1960s, with the pop art movement. Now, it is common to see a fun painting of a sweet.
