It is common belief that medieval painters were not interested in realism. It is important to consider that monks lived in isolated mountains.

It was difficult for them to sketch Babies from life. There is also the matter to consider that paintings as a whole were considered a craft in medieval time.

It only started picking up during the Renaissance period. Due to the insistence of the golden ratio, the babies continued to look like miniature adults. They only started to resemble true human babies in the 1800s.

The impressionists were good at rendering more or less realistic babies. Academic painters also got better at painting babies. Still, even as late as the 20th centuries painters continued to struggle with rendering babies.
