Today, I made a new Hollow Knight fanart. After looking through a bunch of famous paintings, I decided to do a reference to a famous Van Eyck Painting called the Arnolfini Portrait or Wedding.
This painting is famous because of all the small details in the portrait. The original shows a couple in their bedchamber. They are about to consummate their union.
Both are barefooted as shown by the shoes scattered about the bedroom. The wife is in the process of raising her skirt, to show her willingness to reproduce with her husband.

There is a mirror in the middle of the painting. On top of the mirror, there is a signature. It says that Van Eyck is here. Below this signature, there is a mirror. The mirror is decorated with the passion of the Christ.
The reflection shows two figures that have gone inside the couple’s room. In the old days, rich folks had an audience to certify their union and expensive wedding portraits.
The couple are Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife Giovanna Cenami. Their outfits are meant to display their opulence.

Like most wedding portraits, this was a commissioned work, with the couple probably giving their own input into the finished work. In my Hollow Knight fanart, the wedding is between Nailmaster Sheo and the Nailsmith.
The Nailsmith is one of the few Hollow Knight characters that do not get a name. Both bugs have a shared desire to try out a new way of life. The Nailsmith is tired of crafting instruments of death, while Sheo is tired of being a warrior.
Both feel like they reached the pinnacle of their respective crafts. So now, they want to try their hand at creating things. If you visit them, throughout the game, the Nailsmith is being painted like a French Girl by Sheo.

In another visit, both are making wooden figurines. In the achievement Happy Couple, it becomes obvious that they are a mating pair.
After living together for so long, Sheo finally got the courage to ask the Nailsmith to marry him. In commemoration of their wedding, Sheo made this portrait.
The Nailsmith is the girl in the relationship. I chose him as the girl because he was being painting like a French Girl. His eyes also have a soft, delicate shape.

I replaced the dog of the original portrait, with a Grub. In the reflection of the mirror, I painted Hornet.
There was only space enough for one character. She walked in on them once. She came there to have the Nailsmith sharpen her sword.

What she saw was the Nailsmith sharpening Sheo’s Giant Nail. So, in commemoration of that awkward moment, Sheo added Hornet to the background of his painting.
There is a space in the reflection of the mirror. So, you the audience, can imagine yourself with Hornet, walking into to Sheo’s Studio, to certify their union.

I hope you find this Hollow Knight Art Painting Reference amusing.
My name is Teresita Blanco, the Artsy Sister. Bye, bye and God bless.
