It is interesting that she has a blonde doll. I think this shows her rejection of classical Japanese female roles. The game takes place after WWII. Western culture is getting into Japan whether it wants to or not.
This is manifested by the blonde doll. Ever the rebel, Hinako plays with a blonde doll. She doesn’t want to be a traditional Japanese woman like her mom. She is afraid of losing her identity and becoming her husband’s little wife.
This is why everything that has something to do with traditional roles gets morphed. In the nightmare world, traditional Japanese dolls are the enemy. Her helper doll is the blonde one. I can only muse as to how or why she has a blonde doll.
Who Gave Her the Doll?
She either bought it or her sister gifted it to her. I speculate that she might be half Japanese. Or perhaps, her sister fled the country after marrying her secret American lover. This is why her sister manifests with an eagle mask.
Eagles are a foreign symbol. She appears as dead because she is dead to her family for “abandoning them”.
This is why Hinako was pressured into marrying a traditional Japanese dude, to salvage the family honor. I hope this nonsense gives you plenty to think about. I did a short rant about this based on what I played so far in Silent Hill.
