Before the thing started, I had planted a bunch of sunflower seeds in the garden. I had gotten a variety pack of them. A lot of them did not make it because of the birds. Overtime, some plants that were not sunflowers started to grow. I need to get around to weeding the new flower patch.

In among the weeds, there was a plant I did not recognize. I do not know much about flowers. This is the first house with a garden that I have lived in. I have seen houses with pretty gardens, but none I plant in. Anyhow, among the strange plants, and there was this Cosmos.

I found out what type of flower it was thanks to the Animal Crossing game. It is weirdly educational, maybe. The Cosmos seeds come with the wind, or so they say. I have about two Cosmos. The second one has finally opened, and it is a bit smaller. As the photo shows, the butterflies are in love with the Cosmos.

They often fight over the bud. It makes me sad to see butterfly on butterfly violence. I was able to photograph three different butterflies visiting the Cosmos. The first one is a zebra longwing butterfly. They are native to South Florida. They are pretty common in our garden.

They have the unique ability of eating both pollen and nectar. They also like pool water, oddly enough. The males tend to take quick dips. I suppose since the pool has a lot of calcium, it must help the male butterflies or something. The new visitors to the garden are the monarch butterflies.

They first started appearing when the main tree in our front garden flowered. It does it every two years. It was pretty neat. Another butterfly that appears every so often is the Giant Swallow Tail butterfly. I have unfortunately not being able to take a good photo of it.

The butterfly moves too quickly, and it does not linger on any flower. The last butterfly worth mentioning is the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. They are also common residents of the garden. They don’t appear as often as the Zebra butterflies, but they make an appearance at least once a month.

I have seen a couple of little months here, and there, but moths appear mostly at night. I do not have a good nighttime camera. Also, I do not like going out of the house at night. As I said before, I am not a big flower expert. The flower looks like a Cosmos to me. It could be something else.

You know, now that I look at it better, I think it is a type of sunflower. It is called Orange Tithonia Mexican Sunflower. I did buy a mixed bag of sunflowers. I was just not expecting it to look like so. It works just fine I guess. The more you know. Yep, after googling the flowers I am convinced it is a type of sunflower. Anyhow, I hope you find this information useful, and educational.

If you want to get more butterflies into your garden, this Mexican sunflower can help you in that department. You have photographic evidence of the types of butterflies that frequent that flower. You put enough of them together and you can form a shrubbery or something for the knights of Ni.

Anyhow, I hope my photographic adventures amuse you. The first photo was taken last Sunday. It was raining, and I went out like that to take the awesome photo. The other photos were taken today around 2:45 or something.

I hope these butterfly photos bring a slime to your face. As far as sunflowers are concerned, I am still waiting for the mammoth sunflowers to put out some seeds. They will get to it, when they get to it. I don’t want to poke them, when they are not ready.
