It is so difficult to identify butterflies when you only have a photograph to work with. It was easy for me to guess what they were if I photographed them in the wild. The ones you see in these two watercolor paintings were photographed in the Key West Butterfly preserve. They are not native to Florida, but the preserve provides them with all the flowers they need to live long and prosper. I originally started painting one type of butterfly at a time. In the second painting, I showed you two. These butterflies all live in the same butterfly preserve,...

Today, I wanted to show you another set of watercolor paintings. These two butterflies I painted regularly frequent my garden. A few, I only see them close to sunset. The Swallowtail butterfly I photographed it close to sunset. She was standing still while resting on top of the ferns. The butterflies like to hang out in the ferns often. You would never guess that I have a serious bug phobia. Even if you are afraid of little bugs, it doesn’t stop you from appreciating their visual aesthetic. I like butterflies and moths. I really do. So far, I have been making butterfly paintings. I am trying to paint different butterflies. I do not know what type of moth I painted. I took a photograph of it in my garden. You can see above the photographic reference for my paintings. Taking a photograph saves me the trouble of painting outdoors. Painting outdoors in Florida is a bit of a hassle. It is too hot,...

I did two watercolor paintings featuring Mexican Sunflowers. These little sunflowers attract a bunch of different butterflies to my garden. I reworked two photographs into the paintings you see above. The first shows the Sunflower in full bloom. The second painting shows that even a withered flower still attracts butterflies. In fact, the withered flower had more butterflies than the fresh flower. I do not know what that is all about. The first butterfly I think it might be a Tiger Swallow Tail Butterfly. It is a male one to be more specific about it. The three other butterflies are...
