Kite Sailing is very common in Miami Beach. However, it is rare for the conditions to be just right. Usually, I see one or two guys doing the sport. In the day the photo was taken, there was a like a dozen people practicing the sport. It was quite the lovely sight. A lot of people don't know the meaning of the flags by the coast guards.
The significance of the flags are behind the post of the guards. Usually, I see the same purple flag warning of dangerous marine life. There are nurse sharks prowling about the beach. They usually hang out under the rocks. So, if you are getting into an area with large rocks there might be a shark there.
They are nocturnal, so as long as you don't step on them or pester them they won't bite. A lot of shark attacks are cause by humans provoking them. You have to be pretty drunk or stupid to pester a shark. Humans either bully them or kill them because they watched too much Jaws.
I think I went on off topic for a bit. I usually have more sympathy for the fishes, than for the fishermen. So, this is Miami Beach in a nutshell. A lot of sharks, riff tides and muggers in the middle of the night. We usually leave the beach before sunset. When the night falls all the crazies come out.
