The first on is Astalon. You get the first guy by saving him from prison. The other one joins you after giving him a strength crown. They play off each other well during the cutscenes by the bonfire.
Fight wise, they balance each other well. In Atalier Rorona, you run into your party members while exploring or during missions. Your alchemy teacher is also hirable, but expensive.
Bloodstained Curse of the moon 2 has some interesting companion quests. Dragon Age is all about forming the team to fight the darkspawn. You also build an army as well. You need to solve their local problems to recruit them.
Other join you for other fun reasons. Morringa is forced by her mother. Leliana joins your party cause her God told her to. Ender Magnolia gets it party members by giving them a royal beating.
The samurai has an interesting backstory. He is the most humoring of all of them. The original Final Fantasy 7 was good with the companion thing. The remake not so much. In fire emblem, you can convince students from other houses to join you. The fourth house has its own DLC requirements to get them to join the main plot.
In little Sansom, the dragon is the only one that you have to beat to get her to join your party. Radiata Stories has way too many party members to count. Each has its own convoluted quest. The last Remnant is the same.
Some companion quests are pretty hilarious like the Daniel story. He has been telling folks that he is the main character. I need to get around to streaming the Last Remnant, but I can only do one open world game at a time. I will deal with it when I deal with it. Anyhow, there is going to be a video of this blog in my Artsy Sister channel. Please give a like and subscribe.
