Today, I wanted to show you my latest watercolor projects. I like to post my portraits in pairs. It gives the folks plenty to look at.
The first painting is based on an obscure Frida Kahlo painting. Frida’s self-portraits where all about expressing herself.
The originally and symbolism behind her work is the main reason why she became famous.
When I was in Primary School, the art teacher gave us this assignment. She told us to mimic the style of a painter.
The first painting she had us mimic was a self-portrait done Frida Kahlo style. She gave us a mirror to look at our reflection, while we worked.
This childhood memory is the inspiration behind my series of self-portraits. In my version, I showed you first the school uniform I wore in Cuba.
The landscape is a famous mountain in Pinal del Rio that has a cool mural. I did this to keep the landscape as identifiable as possible.
In the center, I show up wearing a cool hip outfit. She represents my casual self. The other hanger features my favorite red dress.
As you can see, the color red carries over across all the dresses. So, the uniform I wore as a child still affects me at a subconscious level.
I made my shoe into a little boat. I didn’t arrive to the states on a boat. I took a plane. It is for this reason that I drew a plane in the background.
Frida Kahlo left her country in search of better conditions. She is square in the middle of her painting.
As for me, I made certain to put most of myself into the ocean waters. When I left Cuba, I never came back.
The next painting worth ranting about is the Marylin Monroe painting of Andy Warhol. He achieved those colors using photomanipulation.
As for me, I did the effects with watercolor paints. Technically, I made four small watercolor paintings.
It took a lot of courage to add the color red into my face. I got more confident with the painting by the time I had to add the color purple.
In two paintings, I had my natural brunette hair. In the other paintings, I had my hair purple and the other blonde.
As part of my own artistic flare, I added glitter watercolors into the mix. I always put glitter on everything.
I hope that you like the finished results. There really isn’t much to say about my pop artist self-portrait.
It is style vs substance. The Frida Kahlo painting has soul.
While the Andy Warhol painting is more stylish. I am not saying that one way is better than the other.
What is Art is subjective. In any case, I think I ranted enough about my watercolor paintings.
My name is Teresita Blanco, the Artsy Sister. Bye, bye and God bless.
