Weddings in Western Art

Weddings started to get depicted in Ancient Egyptian tombs and temples. Usually, the Pharaoh and his spouse were the main subject matter.
It was designed to reassure the population that the royal line was continuing. In Greece and Rome, the Gods marriages tended to be depicted as well as the weddings of kings. In medieval times, Only weddings that appeared in the Bible got illustrated.
Mostly, it was the Wedding of Canaan and the marriage of Mary and Joseph. During the Renaissance, the Kings and Nobles started doing wedding portraits.
Painters also showcased peasant weddings as advertisement pieces. They did that to attract wealthy patrons. In Rococo, Greek Gods also became subject matters.
In the 1800s, all sorts of weddings got depicted. Once we get to modern time, wedding portraits just focused on normal folks.
